NEC UNIVERGE Router WebGUI Bypass: Patch and Restrict the Management Plane
A remediation guide for CVE-2026-16876 in NEC UNIVERGE IX-R and IX-V router WebGUI management, covering firmware validation, WebGUI exposure reduction, and configuration review.

CVE-2026-16876 formalized an unauthenticated WebGUI issue in NEC UNIVERGE IX-R and IX-V routers on 7 September 2026. NEC and JVN had already published the underlying advisory and fixes on 21 August, so the immediate operational task is fixed-firmware verification and management-plane reduction rather than waiting for new patch guidance.
Affected and fixed firmware
The report identifies all versions 1.1 through 1.3, versions 1.4.21 through 1.4.28, and version 1.5.23 as affected. NEC lists versions 1.4.34 and 1.5.29 as fixed.
A remote unauthenticated attacker can tamper with WebGUI messages and execute arbitrary CLI commands. The report found no opened source reporting active exploitation, so remediation should be urgent without claiming confirmed exploitation.
Reduce WebGUI exposure while patching
Upgrade affected devices to 1.4.34, 1.5.29, or a later supported fixed release. If upgrading is delayed, disable IPv4 and IPv6 HTTP(S) server functions.
If WebGUI access must remain available temporarily, restrict management-plane sources with IP or MAC controls and remove WebGUI access from untrusted networks. Review device configuration and administrator activity for unauthorized commands during any period of exposure.
Validate the change
Record the running firmware version, verify that management interfaces are no longer reachable from untrusted paths, and retain configuration and administrator-activity evidence for the exposure period. Treat these checks as separate controls: a successful firmware upgrade does not by itself establish that earlier exposure caused no configuration change.
